Uses
and Gratifications Theory
Researchers Blulmer and Katz expanded this theory and published their own in 1974, stating that individuals might choose and use a text for the following purposes
Diversion - Escape from everyday problems and routine. So for example if you are having a bad day at school or college you will come home and listen to some music or read a certain magazine to cheer you up and forget about the stress of the real world.
Personal Relationships - Using the media for emotional and other interaction. So for example if you have just split up with your boyfriend or girlfriend you will watch certain tv programmes such as Coronation Street to get away from it but then relate to the characters who may be going through the same thing.
Personal Identity - Finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behavior and values from texts. So for example in magazines such has Kerrang they offer help and support to people who are maybe struggling with bullying or any issues like that and people can relate to that if they're going through a hard time themselves.
Surveillance - Information which could be useful for living eg) weather reports, financial news, holiday bargains. Music magazines don't really offer this time of news however things like women's magazines feature things like this. The reason music magazines don't feature this kind of news is because the type of people that read these magazines are not particularly interested in that.
Kids In Glass Houses - Saturday
The reason I like this video is because it goes through the different decades from the 60's up until now showing the popular fashions that were in at the time. So for example starting off in the sixties the band have smart suits on just like The Beatles. 70's it's all about punk and so on.
You Me At Six - Reckless
The reason I like this video is because it shows the band having a good time on tour. Showing lots of footage from the gigs and a lot of backstage footage as well. The video just shows how good the touring life of a band can be and seeing that the hard work of the band has payed off be playing these huge gigs.
All Time Low - Weightless
The reason I like this video is because it is taking the mick out of different people in society. For example taking the mick out of people with stupid tattoos, people in bands themselves and those girls who think they're cool by getting backstage and hanging out with the band. Also the bands performance scenes are great and really capture the energy behind their live gigs.

Initial ideas
My magazine will be mainly rock music therefore there will
be mainly young rock bands featured within, however they could be some older
bands to appeal to the older generation but they won’t be featured too
often. It will be a weekly magazine and
therefore will cost around £2 to make it easy for my target audience which is
mainly students to afford the magazine and therefore buy it every week. It
wouldn’t make sense to have a weekly magazine targeted at 15-30 year olds and
then price it at £5 because they simply wouldn’t be able to afford it and
therefore not able to buy it every week. Also there would be no point in
featuring artists such as Rhianna or Lady Gaga because it wouldn’t interest
readers of a rock magazine and therefore they would not want to read it and
therefore not buy it.
The type of shoot I want to use for my front cover and
double page spread is a new young rock band on the scene who have had to play a
lot of really rubbish gigs along the way, playing all the ‘toilet clubs’ up and
down the country but now have got their big break. The main photos will be them
in a rehearsal studio kind of chilling out there. That will get across the fact
that they’re always thinking about the music whether they are playing or not. However
another idea I’ve had is for the band to be hanging out at the Humber bridge
looking out into the river and the bridge itself implying that they know
they’re about to go on this long journey but they have no idea where they’re
going to end up in the next few years. There will be an interview with the band
discussing everything from how they started the band and the laughs they’ve had
along the way all the way to now and what they plan to do in the near future.
The type of clothes they will be wearing are just normal clothes that lads of
that scene would wear and the fact that they are just normal working class kids
would mean they wouldn’t be wearing incredibly expensive clothes. However I do
have an idea for the band to be wearing black suit jackets at the bridge in the
fact that they are looking to aim for better things and get away from their
home town. I could have the photos in black and white as that is a classic look
for bands however I could have them in colour to show the optimist of the band
and that they have big plans for the future.
Because the photos might be outside I can’t really do anything about the
lighting however if the photos are taken inside I could control the lighting.
It will be bright lights to show that the band are looking at their career in a
positive light rather than having it dark and depressing.
